Artist's Statement |
Several years ago, after a 20-year career as a software developer, I stumbled upon art in a haphazard way. I took a quilting class. This came at a time when I felt that I was living in a spiritual and emotional desert. Just the act of picking the colors and assembling them into patterns felt like an epiphany. The recovery of some vital connection that had been lost to me since childhood, when I had a deep interest in drawing, painting and other forms of artistic expression.
That Sunday afternoon quilting class started my journey of a thousand miles with one Ohio Star pillow cover. I began to think of quilting as art and started to use batik techniques to create fabrics and images to incorporate into quilts. That led more deeply into batik, which for some time I used as a painting medium. Since then, I’ve taken over thirty credits in undergraduate studio art at Montgomery College and Maryland Institute College of Art Continuing Studies. I am currently studying at the Schuler School of Fine Art in Baltimore.

My main medium the last two or three years has been oil paint, but I continue to draw, collage, sew and embrace any other form of expression that engages my imagination. My work has been in juried shows in Maryland and the District of Columbia and has won several awards. I have paintings in private collections in Maryland and several other states.

My own style of painting involves being aware of fantasy, symbols, symbolic relationships and abstract idea. Psychological or spiritual narrative as it relates to our daily lives is the subject of my most recent work. I feel acutely conscious of existence, meaning, purpose, potential and destiny of humankind, people, and self. I am motivated by a calling to the cause of good, growth, and gain in the lives of others. Artistic communication of ideas is a primary way of achieving these objectives for me.
